On October 29th, 2018 a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 was traveling from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang while carrying 189 passengers on board which also include the crew members. The flight number was JT610, crashed into the sea near the Island of Java a little while after it took off from the airport.
One of the officials from the Indonesian Disaster Agency posted a tweet about the accident saying that several pieces of wreckage have been found near the waters off the coast of West Java.
The location of the crash site has been confirmed by the Indonesia Ministry of Transportation.
Officials also stated to media that none of the 189 passengers and the crew members survived the crash.
The aircraft was only two months old and this is the first Boeing 737 MAX that has crashed.
Boeing Company also released a statement in regards to this accident towards Lion Air. They said, “The Boeing Company feels regret and grief for the loss of flight JT 610. We also express our concerns for those who lost their lives and also extend our heartfelt sympathies for the friends and family of the deceased.”
The company also stated, “Boeing is also readily present to assist the accident investigation team in any technical assistance required. In accordance with the International protocol, all of the inquiries about this aviation accident will be directed to Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC).”
