Two Lightning II aircraft are operated by Royal Netherlands Air Force’s first F-35 squadron. Their names are AN-1 (F-001) and AN-2 (F-002), which are currently stationed at the Edwards AFB, California. This Squadron is based at the Airbase as a part of the Joint Operational Test Team for the OT&E (Operational Test & Evaluation Phase).
The squadron which was established back in 1948; on November 15th, 2018 celebrated its 70th anniversary which they commemorated by applying special markings over the tail of one of their Dutch F-35s: aircraft F-002.
The markings were of “Dianna; Goddess of Hunt” which is also the symbol for the squadron. The tail part also has the silhouettes of all the previous aircrafts hat this unit has flown in past 70 years with also the text “70 Years’ written over the marking.
This artwork was applied by the artist named Christy Tortland.
These markings are applied on the panels and fin of the aircraft.
However, the artist later revealed to media that these markings are just the initial ones for photoshoot purposes and later the whole aircraft will be painted.
