Back in 1919 the acting Australian Prime Minister William Alexander Watt on behalf of the Prime Minister William “Billy” Hughes, announced that the Commonwealth Government will offer prize money of 10000 pounds for the successful pilot for making a flight to Australia from Great Britain in a time period of 30 days.

The prize money of 10000 pounds was won by two pilots named Ross and Keith Smith in their Vickers Vimy G-EAOU who flew in their twin-engine plane and landed in Darwin and receive the local, national and international fame.

Now after one hundred years since the first flight from London, Britain to Darwin, Australia, aerospace technology has seen massive booms and enormous strides. A Great Air Race will now again be held to celebrate the achievements of engineers, designers, and aircraft constructors.

During this Great Air Race, four classes of the following aircraft will be allowed.

    • Battery Electric
    • Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric
    • Hybrid Combustion-Engine Electric
    • Efficiency class

Just like back in 1919’s race, these aircraft will start the race by navigating around the globe and reach Darwin on December 10th, 2019.  This race will also be the homage to the century-old day when Sir Ross Smith and his crew changed the course of Aviation forever.

These events which are being held by Australian Aviation to the Centenary Ball will be a great start of the aviation journey next year.
