The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is and America Tiltrotor military aircraft that is used for multi-mission purposes. The aircraft is able to do both vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) along with short takeoff and landing (STOL).
This aircraft was designed to present the functionality to the likes of a conventional helicopter along with the cruise speed performance like a Turboprop aircraft.

Dual Purpose:-
This aircraft cannot be called a helicopter because its official name is a Tiltrotor. This means that this aircraft can either take off vertically like a helicopter or fold its wings to attain fast speed flying like fixed winged aircraft.
Cargo carrying capacity:-
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is mainly used for cargo purposes in the USAF. This aircraft can lift up to 24 combat troops while carrying an internal cargo of 9000 kilograms and an external cargo f 6800 kilograms.
Can be transformed into a War Plane:-
While the main use of this aircraft is for the logistics and search and rescue operations, it can still be turned into a War Pane. There is an option to mount up the following weapons on this aircraft.
- M240 Machine Gun
- A 7.62 mm Gatling Gun
- A Belly mounted Turret Gun
They are really expensive:-
The price for each of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is around 71 million US Dollars. In 29014, US Marines underwent a contract to purchase 360 of these bad boys from Boeing. US Air Force and Navy both purchased 50 of these aircraft. They normally cost three times the price of a popular Black Hawk Helicopter.
Conception and Development:-
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey was originated from Department of Defense’s Joint Service take-off/landing Experimental aircraft in 1981. At that time Bell Helicopter and Boeing Aircraft were both given a joint development contract for the production of a Tiltrotor aircraft. The very first V-22 took the flight back in 1989. The aircraft since then has been deployed in both combat and rescue missions across the following countries.
- Iraq
- Afghanistan
- Sudan
- Libya
Top Speed:-
This aircraft can fly at a max cruise speed of a little over 500 km/h. This is near twice the speed of any utility helicopter in the world.
In-flight refueling capability:-
In 2013 Boeing and Bell Helicopter kitted a prototype aerial refueling system on a V-22 and announced to the world that this aircraft is now a “Flying Gas Station”.
Long Range:-
The V-22 Osprey has a long range of about 2100 nautical miles which roughly calculates into nearly 4000 kilometers.
Sole property of USA:-
At the moment, the V-22 Osprey is only currently being used by the US Army. In 2013 however, US Defense Secretary announced that Israel will be receiving the delivery of the first 6 aircraft in two years. Despite the announcement, delivery has not been made to Israel.
