Nowadays we all see different kinds of planes with varying designs and liveries flying in the sky.  Airlines are continuously introducing newer designs like the Beluga style Airbus manufactured by the Airbus company.

While all of the commercial aircraft are designed to provide a basic function and safety, there happens to be another completely different category of aircraft. These aircraft are designed to serve the experimental purpose and are often bizarrely shaped.

Today for our readers, we have gathered a list of such top 10 most unusual airplanes in the world.

Bartini Beriev VVA-14

Bartini Beriev VVA 14 | Crewdaily

First up on our list is the Bartini Beriev VVA-14 which happens to be an aircraft that comes with detachable wings. This feature alone makes it difficult for the observer to differentiate it from either being a boat or an airplane. Whatever the case may be, this aircraft was designed back in early 1970s by Soviet aviation experts. The primary goal to manufacture this aircraft was to have an aircraft that could not only be launched horizontally but vertically as well. Unfortunately, the Soviets did not go through its completion.

AD-1 Oblique Wing

Next up is the AD-1 Oblique Wing which was weird aircraft that came with the ability to change the wing positions mid-flight. This design was proposed that by shifting wings mid-flight would be more fuel efficient. The project was started by NASA. While the aircraft was completed and lived up to its initial goal of being fuel efficient, the pilots found it to unpleasant to fly this aircraft.

Tacit Blue

Sometimes the need of an aircraft’s stealth ability outweighs its aerodynamic design and the sole example of this feature is the tactic Blue. This aircraft’s aerodynamic design although was bizarrely shaped, it was able to fly through the enemy radars undetected. The aircraft was designed and manufactured back in 1980s. The aircraft unlike the traditional stealth aircraft had a bubble like box body.

Avro Canada VZ-9AV Avrocar

This might be the most controversial aircraft on our list. The name of this aircraft is Avro Canada VZ-9AV Avrocar which happens to look exactly like a flying saucer. The aviation engineers started this project and completed it back in the 1950s. However, despite their utmost efforts, they were never able to give the aircraft, a flight height of 3 feet.

There were many major problems that were never divulged for the public information.  It might be this aircraft that had given life to the UFO Hoax back in the 50s and throughout the 20th century.

McDonnell XF-85 Goblin

The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin was designed with one purpose in mind; to be able to hide inside the body of another aircraft and to be used for bombing the enemy targets. While the idea was ingenious at the time, it never actually lived up to its full potential. The air force did try to place the smaller aircraft in a larger aircraft but this tactic in the end proved to be a dangerous and risky military maneuver.

Vought V-173

The Vought V-173 was deigned to be an aircraft that came with amazing short range lift capability when needed. The design of the aircraft was built in the shape of one wing to provide the aircraft this necessary short lift. The aircraft due to its bizarre shape was also nicknamed as the “Flying Pancake”. Although the aircraft managed to fulfill its intended goal, Navy just could not make the budget cut for green lighting the future project.

X-29 Forward Swept Wing Jet

The wings of the X-29 Forward Swept Wing Jet look as if they are on the backward direction. However, this was not the reason that could prevent it from being tested in an experimental flight.

The main problem was that the aircraft had a complex flight program which made it unable to be flown by any human pilot.  As for the computer system, if it malfunctioned during the flight; you don’t need to be an aviation expert to guess what would happen.

Convair XFY-1 Pogo

The primary problem that any aircraft presents to their users is that they have to be parked at an open and spacious place. In order to counter this need of large space for parking the aircraft, the Convair XFY-1 Pogo was invented. The aircraft was deigned specially for tackling this problem. The Convair XFY-1 Pogo would be able to fly in horizontal takeoff but was able to land in vertical position. To ensure the safe landing vertically, a landing gear was introduced at the tail end of the aircraft.

Antonov A-40

For any military and any war, tanks are the primary source of the military power and without them, no army is considered complete. However, the problems with tanks are that their huge bodies and their heavy mass make them slow in terms of speed while in war, speed is everything.

In order to counter this major problem of tanks, a Russian engineer deigned a tank with wings and an engine to fly it to the war zones. The idea was to drop the tank wherever it was needed. Well, the tank plane only went through one experiment and rest is stowed away in the annals of history.

Goodyear Inflatoplane

As the name of the aircraft; Goodyear Inflatoplane, suggests, this aircraft was able to inflate. It could also be stored in the trunk of the car but at the same time was able to soar as high as 16 thousand feet. However despite all this, the aircraft was never taken too seriously by commercial airlines or militaries. The reason might be that this aircraft could be downed by simply pricking a needle into it.
