On 26th November 2018, the InSight Lander from NASA successfully landed on the Red Planet, Mars after completing its seven months long journey from earth to Mars which was almost 300 million miles.
The name InSight is the abbreviation for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport.
Tom Hoffman at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who is also the InSight project manager said to media, “we hit the Martian atmosphere at 124300 mph and the whole time for this sequence which InSight Lander took for touchdown on the surface of Mars was about 6 and a half minutes. During this short time span, InSight Lander performed dozens of operations and it performed them flawlessly and by all indications that is exactly what our aircraft did.”
InSight is scheduled to operate for 1 Martian Year plus 40 days o sols on Mars which will conclude on 24 November 2020 according to earth’s calendar.
The mission objectives were for the two small MarCOs which have been relayed by InSight’s telemetry, has been completed in the Martian flyby.
