One of the Etihad Airways flight suffered from a severe turbulence on a short flight of just 45 minutes that was to land in Indonesia back on May 4th, 2016. The flight which was hit by sudden and unexpected turbulence left nine passengers gravely injured and hospitalized while 22 others to have other injuries.
The incident happened over the Flight EY474 which took flight from Abu Dhabi and was due to land on the Jakarta International Airport after 45 minutes of air time.
The aircraft which suffered through this incident was Airbus A330-200. The flight landed safely at the Soekarno Hatta International Airport but still nine passengers and a crew member suffered major injuries and were admitted to hospital upon landing.
The other 22 injured passengers were treated at the airport clinic and were later released according to airline.
James Hogan; President and Chief Executive of Etihad Airways said to media that, “ we commend our pilots and cabin crew members for maintaining their professional and calm manner of dealing with this unexpected event along with the car they showed the passengers despite several of themselves being injured.”
He further stated that, “it is a testament to our high standard of crew training that the effects of turbulence were minimized. The safety of aircraft, passengers or crew members was never compromised”.
A video has also surfaced online by one of the on board passengers which shows the distressed passengers while the aircraft shook and oxygen masks tumbled out of the compartments along with ceiling tiles were dislodged.
Hemi Pamuraharjo; the spokesperson for the Indonesian Transportation ministry said that, several of the passengers suffered from broken bones. He also said that the several officials of the Indonesian authorities have investigated the plane.
Airline has also met with families of severely injured passengers and assured them that they will bear the full medical expense of their loved ones.
